- Feb. 20-24: Social Studies & Political Science
-
Throughout the month of February, students across the district will be learning about the achievements, contributions and efforts of African Americans to the fields of language and literature, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), arts and music, and social studies and political science. This fourth week, Feb. 20-24, we're focusing on social studies and political science.
Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School
Fifth-graders at Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School read about the history of voting and then researched an African American politician.
Jefferson Elementary School
Students in Mr. Knapp’s art class at Jefferson Elementary learned about the Tuskegee Airmen and their accomplishments, and watched a short clip of the movie, Red Tails. Each student was taught how to draw their own P-51 Mustang airplane. Check out Mr. Knapp's example drawing and the work of our budding student artists!
Lincoln Elementary School
Mrs. Baker's 4th grade class engaged with Week 4's theme of Social Studies and Politics by learning about Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 .
McKinley Elementary School
Kindergartners watched a biography on Barack Obama, watched Barack and Michelle Obama read a story aloud on video, and read about his life in a reader that the students are coloring in the photos. Way to go, Mariners!
Perry Elementary School
Fourth grade students at Perry created a "quilt" with interlocking hexagons featuring photos and information of Black Americans who helped change the world, including politicians and social activists.
Harding Elementary School
Impossible to say which is cuter: our Harding Dragons or the artwork they created celebrating Jackie Robinson, the first Black professional baseball player in the modern era.
Strong Vincent Middle School
Eighth graders in Mr. Shaffer's class are learning about the Freedom Riders and the role they played in the civil rights movement and fighting racial segregation in the South.
Edison Elementary School
Click on the image below to hear Edison Elementary School's Isabella Sanders share her thoughts on perseverance, as inspired by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
East Middle School
The future leaders of East Middle School shared what they know about Barack Obama, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others as part of Black History Month presentations focusing on social studies and political science.
Patrick J. DiPaolo Student Success Center at Emerson-Gridley (EPS Cyber Choice Academy
EPS Cyber Choice Academy Middle School students have been working on a Black History project throughout the month of February. The students have been learning about a different person in each class. They research the name, picture, and biography of each historic figure. Then, they cut out the different pieces and piece it together forming a quilt of different people. On Classkick they review a slide of every person that they learned about. Each student shares a different story with the class and the quilt is displayed in the hallway with pride. Please return throughout the week as we add more student work!
