    James Murphree, a veteran educator and North Carolina native, was hired in 1969 to serve as an assistant principal at what was then Academy High School. He would go on to serve as principal at Wilson Middle School from 1971 to 1979 and principal at Burton Elementary School from 1979 to 1980. He retired from the district in 1982.
