The Special Education Office offers educational workshops and training sessions to parents, guardians and caregivers on various topics related to Special Education throughout the year. When scheduled, those events will be described here and listed on the calendar below.

Developing Psychological Counseling as a Related Service
Dates: September 26, 2024, through December 04, 2024
Location: Online Course through Schoology
Psychological Counseling as a Related Service will provide local education agencies with the information needed to identify students who are eligible for related services, implement the services, and monitor students' progress in response to the services. This Schoology course will build the capacity of school teams, including school-based mental health providers (school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers), to follow the special education process, from the legal basis through the identification of need, implementation of a continuum of services, and monitoring of continued needs for services for eligible students.

Team Initiated Problem Solving (TIPS): Efficient and Effective Teaming

The Team Initiated Problem Solving (TIPS) framework can be used to run efficient and effective meetings through the application of foundational principals and a data protocol. It can be used during meetings (e.g., PBIS, RTI, MTSS) focused on data-based decision making to improve student outcomes. TIPS is applicable to varied data sources, content areas, and levels of application. Participants will learn the basics of TIPS and gain the skills to begin immediate implementation of the framework.

Outside Presenter PaTTAN West:- Amy L. Dillow is a Training and Consultation Consultant at Intermediate Unit 1, supporting training and consultation efforts focused on Behavior. Additionally, she is a local PBIS Facilitator, and she is trained as a Licensed Social Worker.
- Dr. Mariha Shields is a Training and Consultation Team Member at ARIN IU28 specializing in Learning Environment, Student Engagement, Mental Health, and Inclusive Practices. Prior to her work at ARIN IU, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders, Special Education, and Disability Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Shields began her career in basic ed teaching Special Education at Marion Center Middle and High School for 11 years. Her interests include teacher preparation, positive behavior support, differentiated instruction, co-teaching, social emotional learning, and youth mental health first aid. Dr. Shields attended IUP and earned her Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction, master’s degree in special education, and Undergraduate degree in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Connecting the Office of Developmental Programs through Charting the LifeCourse and Waiver Services
The morning portion of this session will offer the audience an in-depth overview of the history and genesis of Charting the LifeCourse from a national and Pennsylvania perspective. Additionally, audience members will learn about each of the elements of the Charting the LifeCourse framework and principles, as well as the foundational Life Course Tools. Audience members will have the opportunity, during the final portion of the session, to apply what they learned about the framework and principles by using the LifeCourse Tools on themselves in a small-group fashion, thereby increasing their sense of self-efficacy in utilizing these tools within their personal and professional environments after the session ends. The afternoon portion of this session will offer the audience an overview of the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) eligibility, registration, the three waivers and the services offered in these waivers. Additionally, audience members will learn about Supports Coordination and the Individual Support Plan (ISP), as well as additional supports and services available through Medicaid funding for children under the age of 21.
