On December 4, 2015, Green Team students braved
the balmy winter weather to collect trash on West 38th Street as part of the
Adopt-A-Highway Program. Many recyclable items were collected along with
pieces of trash, particularly cigarette butts. The students carried a
sign that stated, "Please don't throw cigarette butts on the ground."
The team strives to educate the public on how littering can negatively
impact our watershed. More than 75% of the storm drains do not transfer
water to the Waste Water Treatment Plant and flow directly into Presque Isle
Bay, having a detrimental effect on wildlife and water quality. Many passersby beeped their horns and thanked the students for their
efforts.
