The WSCC Model in Erie's Public Schools
We cultivate an environment of health and wellness with the help of The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model, the CDC's framework for addressing school health. Using community resources, we address ten different modules to make the student feel healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged:
Health/ Physical Education
Health and Physical Education is a combined class at all levels. At the middle school and high school levels, students have Health & PE every other day for one semester. At the elementary level, students have Health & PE all year, every 4-6 days, depending on the school. Find out more here.
Nutrition Environment & Services
We partner with Metz Culinary Management to offer students breakfast and lunch that meets USDA nutrition guidelines. Students have the opportunity to consume 5+ fruits and vegetables every school day.
Health Services
Check out our big project this year, Glasses2Classes, which provided every participating student with a free eye exam and glasses for those who needed them.
The Mobile Dentist also comes to each of our schools twice/year to provide free dental exams and necessary dental work to participating students. Find out more about Health Services here.
Counseling/ Psychological/ & Social Services
At Erie’s Public Schools, we value the whole student, which includes addressing their mental and emotional well-being.

Social and Emotional Learning
At Erie’s Public Schools, we value the development of a child’s social and emotional well-being. All schools, K-12 participate in a School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) to promote positive behavioral skills. Find out more about PBIS here.
Students K-5 receive daily lessons through Respectful Ways, a trauma-informed method of socio-emotional learning. Students 6-8 receive daily lessons through Second Step,a program that helps students learn to communicate and collaborate, solve problems, make good decisions, set and meet goals, and process their emotions.
Physical Environment
The physical environment is a key component of student and staff wellness, and is supported by a multimillion-dollar districtwide facilities plan that aims to ensure all our buildings are warm, safe and dry places for students to grow and staff to work.

Family Engagement
We recognize a child’s education is a responsibility shared by the school and family. To effectively educate all students, the schools and parents must work together as equal partners. We define parent and family involvement as an ongoing process assisting parents and families in meeting their basic obligation as the first educators for their children. This process promotes a clear two-way dialogue between home and school and supports parents as leaders and decision makers in all instances concerning the education of their children.
Find out more about Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy here.
Community Involvement
Erie’s Public Schools collaborates with the United Way of Erie County to employ the Community Schools model. All elementary schools and middle schools are community schools and Erie High school will become a community school in the 2024-2025 school year. Find out more about community schools here.
