Greetings!
I am pleased to be your student's art teacher this academic year at PJD/Cyber at Emerson-Gridley! Great things are in store for our students in their Visual Art classes. You can be assured that experiences in the art classes will enhance your student's learning in positive ways.
Every elementary and middle school student is scheduled to take Art Education class once a week. Each grade level will complete art projects that integrate the 7 Art Elements: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture, Space . . . with the . . . 7 Design Principles: Balance, Emphasis, Unity, Contrast, Rhythm, Pattern, Movement. The students will study and complete art projects using a variety of materials and tools from crayons, markers, paper, pencils, scissors, glue, tape, staplers, paint, brushes, ink, yarn, plaster, metal, clay, etc. so they gain a variety of Art experiences. Depending on their grade level, the students will produce art in many ways: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Tracing, Cutting, Gluing, Assembling, Mixing-different Media, Collage-making, Molding, Forming, Weaving.
High school students may choose to schedule a quarterly Art class. The High School Art class meets every day for an hour and 25 minutes -- earning your student .5 credit as an elective course. Higher level Art projects are explored and studied in various media (graphite, charcoal, pastels, paint, ink, mold work, yarn, and various mixed-media materials). There are 4 Units: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking/Mixed-Media, and a 3-Dimensional Form/Sculpture. Art History, historical artists, contemporary art and artists from around the world are taught throughout each unit. Aesthetics, the appreciation of different styles of Art, will be developed. Critical Thinking through group critiques and discussions will be shared.
Each grade level "builds-on" the ART production skills learned from the previous school year. An appreciation for making ART and looking at ART will occur. Every year the students learn about famous artists throughout ART history. And, the students will also learn how-to talk about ART in small and large group discussions.
A successful school year is a partnership between student, teacher, and parents/guardians. I am excited to work with you, and I look forward to many enjoyable Art lessons with your student. If you have any questions or concerns during our time together, please feel free to contact me via my district email or call the school phone, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Peterson,
Art teacher
