The Roosevelt Quiz Bowl team is open to all students in sixth through eighth grade. The club is in its fourth year of existence and is coached by Mr. Bryan Lewis. The team competes in National Academic Quiz Tournaments mainly in Ohio. This year there are fourteen members in the club.
Quiz Bowl is an academic competition in which teams of four players square off against each other to buzz in and answer questions before their opponents. Questions range from pop music to world geography to Shakespeare to Sponge Bob. Many high schools and colleges also have Quiz Bowl teams. Seventy-four time Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings was the captain of his team at Brigham Young.
The team's first competition this year was in East Palestine, Ohio. The "A" team comprised of Nate Hanrahan, Liam Pohl, Joseph Smith, and Christine Kim went 6-1 and finished third in the 14 team event. This earned the team one of the coveted 128 berths to the NAQT National Championship to be held in May in Atlanta, Georgia. The club is in the process of fundraising to be able to attend. This was the second time in three years the team has qualified for nationals.
There are at least four other tournaments the club is hoping to enter this year : Copley, OH (December 12th), Solon, OH (February 13th), Villa Maria Academy (February 27th), and Atlanta, GA (May 8-10, NAQT National Championship).
