School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support

  • What are School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports?

"School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) is a proactive approach to discipline that promotes appropriate student behavior and increased learning. Traditionally, models of school discipline tend to be reactive (i.e., student misbehavior results in punitive consequences).

The system is based upon a three-tiered model. The first tier (universal) serves as the foundation upon which the other two tiers are built. This tier provides a system of support for all students in a school based on preventative practices which emphasize teaching and reinforcing expected student behaviors. Tier two (secondary) provides targeted interventions to support students classified as “at risk,” who require more intervention than is typically provided within tier one universal support. Supports offered in tier three (tertiary) require the most intensive level of intervention for students with the most significant behavioral/emotional support needs.

    School-Wide Matrix

At the foundation of tier one are a handful of expectations that are taught to all students. At Pfeiffer-Burleigh, we follow three school-wide expectations: At Pfeiffer-Burleigh, students and staff are

    Respectful, Responsible, and Safe

This system also includes students working for incentives.  PB has a variety of different incentive programs for students to be a part of.

    These include:

Classroom: Each classroom or grade level team will design an acknowledgment and incentive system to reward student success regarding expectations of the classroom or grade level matrix. This acknowledgment system is different from the school-wide systems but can follow a similar format.

When a classroom collects enough PAWS to earn an incentive, they get to choose an incentive for the class from the incentive menu.

The lunch staff announces the winners at the end of lunch and records the winners in the lunch binder. The “Golden Spatula” token is added to the classroom scoreboard and the homeroom teacher awards a Panther Point in PBIS Rewards. When a class accumulates ten spatulas, the homeroom teacher will award an additional bonus Panther Point to each student in the homeroom.

Students can be awarded Panther Points and redeem them at our Panther Pop-Up Shop.

    Strive for Five:

This incentive is awarded for meeting the school goal of 90% or more of students in attendance on a given day. On a mystery day each week, a daily attendance report is run. If 90% or more of students are in attendance, the Strive for Five will be awarded along with a celebratory announcement. Every fifth win, students will earn a Strive for Five reward that has been chosen by the students.
